When installing carpet, trim and baseboard considerations are a bit different than with hard surface flooring. Here's what you need to know:
Is Quarter Round Used with Carpet?
No. Quarter round is typically not used with carpet installations. Carpet is soft and flexible, and pressing quarter round against it can cause it to look uneven or “mushed.” Most homeowners prefer the clean appearance of carpet tucked neatly under the baseboards without additional trim.
However, if quarter round is already in place and you’d like to keep it, that’s usually fine. Just keep in mind that it may slightly alter the look of the finished edge.
Should Baseboards Be Installed Before or After Carpet?
Baseboards should be installed before carpet. They serve several important purposes:
- Tucking Edge: The baseboard provides a firm edge for the carpet to be tucked under during installation, helping to secure it in place.
- Wall Protection: It protects the drywall from damage during the stretching process, especially from the power stretcher used to tightly install the carpet.
- Cleaner Finish: Installing carpet after the baseboards are in place results in a neater, more professional look.
Installation Tip: Leave a 3/8-inch gap between the bottom of the baseboard and the subfloor. This space allows the carpet to be tucked in properly for a secure and seamless finish.
Keep in mind, the carpet backing may scuff baseboards during installing. It's best to install baseboards before, but paint them after, carpet installation.
Can Quarter Round Be Left in Place for Carpet Installation?
Yes, but it’s optional. While quarter round is not required for carpet, some homeowners choose to leave it in place for aesthetic reasons. Others prefer to remove it for a cleaner look. If you’re unsure, your Lowe’s Flooring Specialist can help you decide what will work best for your space.
Will My Baseboards Get Scratched During Installation?
Possibly. Carpet backing is rough and can cause minor scuffs or scratches on baseboards during installation. This is especially true if your trim has been painted over an older varnish finish, which may be more prone to chipping or peeling.
What You Can Do:
- Be prepared to do some light touch-up painting after installation.
- If you’re concerned about damage, consider painting or refinishing your baseboards after the carpet is installed.
