Installing new flooring—whether carpet or hard surfaces—requires careful attention to indoor climate conditions. These guidelines help ensure proper installation and protect your warranty.
Carpet Installation Requirements
Before installation begins, your home must meet specific temperature and humidity standards. These conditions must be maintained for:
- At least 48 hours before installation
- During installation
- 72 hours after installation
Required conditions:
- Indoor temperature: Between 65°F and 95°F (18°C to 35°C)
- Relative humidity: No more than 65%
- Substrate surface temperature (floor level): At least 65°F (18°C)
After installation:
Do not allow the temperature in carpeted areas to fall below 50°F (10°C) at any time, regardless of how long the carpet has been installed.
Hard Surface Flooring Requirements
Hard surface flooring (such as hardwood, laminate, vinyl, or tile) also requires a stable indoor climate:
- Indoor temperature: Maintain between 60°F and 80°F (16°C to 27°C)
- Relative humidity: Between 35% and 55%
HVAC (Air Conditioning [AC] and/or Heating) Requirements:
- Permanent heating and/or air conditioning systems must be operational for at least 5 days before installation.
- If permanent systems are not yet installed, temporary climate control systems must be used to maintain the required conditions.
Why Climate Control Matters
Flooring materials expand and contract with changes in temperature and humidity. Installing in an unstable environment can lead to issues like warping, buckling, adhesive failure, or poor fit. A properly controlled climate ensures your flooring performs as expected and lasts for years.
Think of it like Goldilocks—your home’s temperature needs to be just right. Keeping your home between 65°F and 72°F year-round is ideal for long-term flooring performance. This is why working air conditioning and/or heating is not just needed—it's a must!
Important Notes
- To begin the installation, electricity must be running in the home and HVAC systems (heating and/or air conditioning) must be operational.
- If your home does not meet these conditions, installation will need to be rescheduled.
- Failure to maintain these conditions will void all labor and material warranties on your new flooring.
