When preparing for a new flooring installation, it’s important to understand what issues we can and cannot address as part of the service. Below are answers to some frequently asked questions about subfloor conditions and preparation.
Will You Fix My Squeaky Floors?
Unfortunately, no. Squeaky floors are typically caused by movement in your existing subfloor, and this is not something we can repair during installation.
What You Can Do:
- If you'd like to attempt to screw down the squeaky areas before installation, let us know. We can help schedule time for you to do this during the installation.
- Keep in mind: Even if you secure the subfloor, squeaks may still return over time.

- Your local Lowe’s paint specialist can guide you on best practices.
- You can also find instructions directly from Kilz here: Kilz Website

Do I Need to Remove Staples If I’m Taking Up the Carpet Myself?
Yes. Removing staples is a necessary part of the carpet and pad removal process.
Why It Matters:
- If staples are left behind, it can delay installation and may result in additional charges.
- The subfloor must be clean and swept before our team arrives.
Pro Tip: Use needle-nose or lineman’s pliers to pull staples, or try a flat garden hoe to scrape them up while standing. Be cautious if you’re trying to preserve finished hardwood underneath.
Do I Need to Remove my Existing/Old Tackstrips?
Please leave the old tack strips in place. We should be able to reuse them. If there are any that are in bad shape we will pull them up and replace them when we arrive.
What Moisture Level Is Acceptable in My Subfloor?
Moisture levels are critical when installing wood flooring, but acceptable levels vary by manufacturer.
General Guidelines:
- Most manufacturers require the moisture difference between the subfloor and the new wood flooring to be no more than 3–4%.
- Always refer to the installation instructions included in your flooring box or visit the manufacturer’s website for exact specifications.
There’s a Hole in My Floor—Can You Just Cover It With Carpet?
We cannot cover a hole in your floor with carpet, or any floor covering material. Your subfloor must be in good condition before we can install any flooring over it.
Why Not?
- Covering a hole would be a safety and liability issue.
- Flooring must be installed over a stable, level surface.
What You Can Do:
- You’ll need to repair or fill the hole before installation day.
- A quick online search for “handyman near me” can help you find a local professional who can assist with this type of repair.
