When a customer plans to remove their existing carpet themselves, it is important to discuss the status of the existing tack strip to prevent installation delays and ensure the correct materials are available on installation day.
Ask About Existing Tack Strips
If carpet removal was originally included in the detail but the customer later decides to complete the removal themselves, be sure to ask if the existing tack strip already been removed.
Many customers may not realize the tack strip serves an important role in the installation process.
For New Carpet Installations
When installing new carpet, the existing tack strip should be left in place, as it can often be reused. If the existing tack strip is damaged or unsuitable for reuse, the installer can replace it during the installation.
If the customer has already removed the tack strip, it is important that we know in advance so the installer can be prepared with enough new tack strip materials for the installation.
For Hard Surface Installations
When carpet is being replaced with a hard surface product (such as laminate, vinyl, hardwood, or tile), all existing tack strips must be removed before installation.
Why This Matters
Accurately documenting the status of existing tack strips helps:
- Prevent installation-day delays
- Ensure installers arrive with the necessary materials
- Avoid unexpected issues during installation
- Improve the overall customer experience
Always document whether the existing tack strip will remain in place, has already been removed, or will be removed by the customer prior to installation.
